The massive trunk is topped with a crown of stiff , dark green sword-shaped leaves . The leaves of mature plants are characterized by fibers , which break off at the edges and curl . The leaf angles also show fibers , which persist at the top of the stem . Each leaf ends with a sharp tip , which makes the yucca very prickly .
